BACKGROUNDS PAST AND PRESENT
PAST

History: In the ancient Elven tongue Hillsflat is known as Arulava or "City of 5 men", in the Drow tongue it is Gulastak or "Last Stand". Since its inception, this area has been the home of 5 races.
First founded by the dwarven clan Voltag, the mountains were mined for the rich load of marble, silver, and granite found there. Where Hillsflat sits now was a small mountain the dwarves had carved out to form their home. From VolHelm the dwarves left to mine the mass riches to be had from the Rushmore Mountains. Living in perfect peace for 100s of years the Voltag dwarves became extinct after a most unexpected natural disaster. Celebrating their 500th year of prosperity, VolHelm was struck by a meteor which leveled the small mountain and killed off almost all of the Voltag. Only those few dwarves who were off deep within the mountains were spared. Finding their home leveled to the ground (though the underground sections still existed) the few remaining dwarves erected a small town in the craters center and began a sorrowful period of mourning and reconstruction. The Rushing River which had once gone around the mountain, now traveled into the crater. Creating a remarkable series of trenches and locks, the dwarves redirected the river and carved out part of the crater allowing the river to continue flowing south out of the crater.
Unknown to the Voltag was that the massive impact from the meteor had drawn the attention of something even deadlier. Making their way up from the underdark to investigate, the Drow happened upon the dwarfish clan. In less than a day it was over and the Voltag clan was slaughtered. The Drow emptied the dwarves riches, carting them up to be taken deep into the ground never to be seen again. Using the dwarven town as an outpost, the Drow pulled raids on many nearby towns all the while fortifying the town and constructing more buildings. For a mere 50 years the drow ruled the area until they encountered the Sleestak.
Living south of the town, the lizard men had achieved great levels of intelligence and were a peaceful race until the encountered the Drow. A battle ensued and the drow were forced to flee the town when the Sleestak blocked off the lower section of the Rushing River, flooding the town and driving the remaining drow back into the ground.
The sleestak exploring the dwarven mines and fortifications began upon the road that would lead to their downfall. They moved into the town and became very powerful in magic from stuff left behind from the drow, and in metallurgy from the left overs from the dwarves. As each became smarter, the race drifted apart and individuals lived alone learning all they could. A vast majority of them moved into private homes on the mountain living separately from each other.
Nature again destroyed yet another culture, when against all odds, another meteor fell this time striking the mountain range. Once again another race was doomed to destruction. All of the lizardmen died in the impact and the rushing river again changed course. This time running through the gap in the mountains and straight through the crater that would become Hillsflat.
The sudden loss of the lizardmen paved the way for the fourth race to inhabit the area.
Following the now open path through the mountains and finding no major resistance, the Oblodoran goblin clan happened upon the now abandoned city. Finding it easy pickings the clan moved in and scavenged everything they could find in an effort to defend themselves. The clan had been on the run after a botched attack on the city of Shar far to the North. Using the river to escape they, by chance found the city. Unknown to them was that the king of Shar and his closest companions were still after them. It took the Fellowship of the Shard several years to actually find the Oblodoran clan and the battle cost the lives of over half the group. But in the end the clan was routed and King Bax-Shard declared the area and extension of Shar and under his protection. The ranger Tond and the warrior Sothgar were left behind to scout out the area as King Shard returned to his kingdom.
Settlers were sent out and before long the city of Hillsflat was established. In the intervening years Hillsflat has had several repeat conflicts with the (now diminished) Oblodoran clan, always ending the same way with the goblins retreating even fewer in numbers.
In the first few years of the cities history, Tond, Sothgar, and Ariel (Shards daughter) ruled with a light hand, but over time Tond feeling the call of nature, moved on (To secretly form the Watchers), Sothgar retired and created an academy of war (Later named after him by Ariel) and Ariel retired officially to let a council take over the rulership and upkeep of the city. In his infinite wisdom, (and at Ariels request) Bax-shard released the city from his control, turning it completely over to the ruling council.

PRESENT
The Watchers have reported increased signs of activity from the clan Oblodoran goblins, including a possible union of forces with the Gulstank clan.
